Bodegas Amézola de la Mora

Our Château

One of the oldest wineries in La Rioja.

Domingo Salustiano Manso de Zúñiga y Areyzaga, VIII Count of Hervías and Viscount of Negueruela, ordered in 1816 the construction of a winery in Torremontalbo, a town that had been in the hands of his family since the 13th century.

Behind the masonry walls of this winery, the personal history of our family throbs.

Underground cellars

Under this building, a series of subway galleries (calados) were excavated and lined with ashlar stone.

These cavities were used for the ageing of the bottled wine thanks to the fact that they maintain a constant temperature of around 13 degrees and a constant humidity of 85% throughout the year.

The width of its arches, which are unparalleled in La Rioja, is proof of its nobility as it indicates that the winery was designed to produce and store a large quantity of wine from not only the vineyards of Torremontalbo, but also from the rest of the towns in the area of which the Count of Hervías was lord.

One of the oldest wineries in La Rioja.

Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, the construction of another building was carried out, following the same architectural style as the first one, with the aim of preserving the old winery from the 19th century.

It would have four functions:

· Bottling room and warehouse
· Mostly offices
· Caretaker’s house
· Dining room for meetings and meals

The Fifth Generation

In 1987, the new winery, a fusion of the heritage and efforts of the Amézola brothers, was founded under the name of Bodegas Amézola de la Mora, S.A. Cristina Downes, the widow of Iñigo Amézola, took on the great challenge of leading the winery. Not only did she do a great job, but in 2001 she produced the first vintage of a wine, a tribute to one of the founders, Íñigo Amézola Tinto.

In 2005 the sisters María and Cristina, daughters of Iñigo and Cristina, became the youngest Spanish winemakers in Spain and joined the winery. They represent the fifth generation of the family.
